Caldeirão Verde
A Jungle-Like Journey Into Madeira’s Green Cathedral.

The Levada do Caldeirão Verde is a masterpiece of Madeira’s Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem bursting with endemic life. Along the trail, towering til trees, laurel, heather and moss-draped branches create a living canopy that feels like stepping inside a prehistoric rainforest. Ferns grow in abundance, lining the levada edges, while waterfalls and streams carve their way down basalt rock faces shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions.
Birdlife is rich – listen for the delicate calls of the Madeira firecrest, watch chaffinches hop along the path and spy kestrels soaring above the valley walls. The trail also passes through several hand-carved tunnels, reminders of the island’s impressive water-management history. These levadas were meticulously built to transport water from the wet northern slopes to agricultural zones, making them both scenic and culturally significant.
As you near the end, the landscape tightens into a dramatic gorge where the Caldeirão Verde waterfall reveals itself. Falling from over 100 metres into a cold, clear lagoon, the waterfall sits inside a natural volcanic amphitheatre – lush, humid and echoing with the sound of cascading water. Mist rises from the pool like a veil, giving the place a mystical, otherworldly feel.
It’s one of Madeira’s most enchanting natural sanctuaries, blending geology, biodiversity and serene beauty into a single unforgettable moment.
