Referta – Castelejo
A Rural Escape Through Terraces, Valleys and Quiet Traditions.

This charming trail winds through the rural heart of Porto da Cruz, where terraced fields step down the hillsides in green cascades. Here, locals have cultivated land for generations, shaping the slopes with stone walls and irrigation channels that tell the story of Madeira’s agricultural resilience.
Along the path, vineyards stretch toward the coast, banana groves thrive in pockets of sun, and small vegetable plots show the island’s connection to land and family traditions. The flora reflects Madeira’s drier northeast microclimate—prickly pears, eucalyptus, fennel and hardy shrubs thrive alongside patches of endemic species such as heather and barbusano. Birds like the kestrel and the Madeira wagtail are common sightings, dancing above the fields or perching on terrace walls.
As you approach Castelejo, the scenery widens and reveals panoramic views of Penha d’Águia – the dramatic rock formation that dominates the region. The trail offers glimpses of rural life: farmers tending small fields, traditional stone houses, and the faint scent of firewood drifting from village kitchens. Castelejo itself is quiet, authentic and steeped in old Madeira charm, offering a moment to pause and appreciate the simplicity and beauty of the island’s countryside.
This walk is not about intensity – it’s about atmosphere, heritage and landscapes shaped by human hands over centuries.
