Maroços – Vale das Mimosas
A Gentle Valley Walk Wrapped in Blossoms.

Located in the sunny valley of Machico, this walk is famous for its abundance of mimosa trees that paint the hillsides in bright yellow during blooming season. The air fills with a soft, sweet fragrance, while bees and butterflies drift among the flowers, creating a gentle, idyllic rhythm.
The levada winds through terraced farmland – one of Madeira’s most traditional landscapes – where locals cultivate bananas, sweet potatoes, vegetables and small vineyards. Stone walls and irrigation channels reveal generations of agricultural craftsmanship. The valley’s microclimate is mild and sunny, encouraging a rich mix of Mediterranean and subtropical flora, from eucalyptus and acacia to bougainvillea, fennel and wild herbs growing freely along the trail.
Birdlife here is friendly and common: chaffinches, wagtails and island sparrows often flutter ahead or rest on levada edges. The walk offers glimpses of village life, terracotta rooftops, garden plots and quiet backroads, all set against rolling green hills. It’s a route where nature and rural culture blend seamlessly – simple, calming, and full of gentle beauty.
