Levada do Rei
A Forest Corridor Where Nature Still Reigns.

The Levada do Rei trail winds through one of Madeira’s best-preserved pockets of Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage gem. Ferns, moss and ancient laurel trees line the levada, creating a green tunnel that feels both soothing and wild. The air is cool and fragrant, often carrying the earthy scent of damp wood and mountain water.
Along the route, you can spot endemic species like the delicate Madeira firecrest or hear the flutter of chaffinches hidden in the branches. The levada itself was built centuries ago to transport water from the highlands of São Jorge, and its gentle flow provides a calming soundtrack throughout the walk.
As you move deeper into the valley, the scenery opens onto views of steep, forested cliffs and small cascades that seep from the rocks. The final stretch is especially scenic, where lush vegetation wraps around the path and the sound of flowing water grows stronger. It’s a route that blends simplicity, beauty and nature at its purest – an easy-going but deeply rewarding walk.
