Rabaçal – 25 Fontes
Where Waterfalls, Forests and Levadas Come Alive.

The Rabaçal – 25 Fontes Walk is one of Madeira’s greatest showcases of Laurissilva biodiversity. As you descend into the Rabaçal valley, you enter a living museum of ancient flora: towering heather trees, til trees, Madeira mahogany, and an entire world of mosses, lichens and ferns thriving in the cool mountain moisture. The Laurissilva canopy filters sunlight in delicate green tones, creating the island’s famous “enchanted forest” atmosphere.
Along the levadas you’ll encounter curious wildlife, Madeira firecrests flitting through branches, kestrels circling above, and the occasional buzz of endemic insects found nowhere else on Earth. The levadas themselves are masterpieces of engineering, built by hand to guide mountain water to the south of the island, weaving history into every step of the journey.
The Risco Waterfall offers a dramatic curtain of water cascading down tall basalt cliffs shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity. Moving deeper into the valley, the path transforms into a narrow corridor of ferns and twisting roots leading to the jewel of the walk: the 25 Fontes Lagoon. Fed by numerous natural springs dripping from the rock face, this crystalline pool sits in a natural amphitheatre of lush vegetation and volcanic stone. Its cold, clear waters reflect the forest surroundings – an untouched oasis where nature feels raw and timeless.
This walk is a blend of geology, botany, wildlife and water in its purest form – an immersive dive into Madeira’s natural heritage.
