Pico Ruivo
A Sky-High Path to Madeira’s Roof.

The trail to Pico Ruivo crosses Madeira’s ancient volcanic ridge, offering uninterrupted views over deep valleys, rugged pinnacles and rolling seas of clouds. The landscape is shaped by millions of years of geological activity, leaving behind jagged basalt formations and dramatic cliffs that make this route one of the island’s most atmospheric.
Flora here is adapted to altitude: mountain heather, endemic Madeira violet and tough grasses cling to the rocky terrain. In spring, the peaks burst into colour with small alpine flowers brightening the path. As you ascend, you may spot kestrels circling on thermal currents or hear the distant calls of island wrens echoing through the valleys.
The final climb opens to the highest point on Madeira – Pico Ruivo at 1,862 metres. From the summit, the island spreads out in every direction: Paul da Serra to the west, the jagged ridge of Pico do Areeiro to the south, and the deep, green north valleys carved from ancient eruptions. Above the clouds, the light and atmosphere constantly shift – sunrise here is legendary, with colours that paint the sky in every shade imaginable.
This route is short, powerful and emotionally memorable – Madeira’s mountain spirit in its purest form.
